Sounds-Write Phonics Programme
Did you know that children with speech and language difficulties often experience challenges in developing reading and writing skills?
Developing functional literacy skills are essential for accessing the school curriculum and furthering learning about the world around us.
Emma is trained in Sounds-Write, a structured synthetic phonics programme that supports the phonemic awareness (i.e., understanding of sound and letter correspondences), decoding (i.e., word reading) and encoding (i.e., word spelling) skills for young children. Sounds-Write is an internationally recognised phonics programme that is taught across numerous schools within the UK.
As an experienced Speech and Language Therapist, Emma is able to support your child to develop foundational literacy skills by providing individualised treatment to target the specific areas of difficulty they are experiencing in a fun and engaging way.
For more information, please see the Sounds-Write website.
The Sounds-Write Phonics Programme can support with the following areas:
Learning letter-sound correspondences (e.g., the letter g makes a ‘guh’ sound)
Segmenting, blending and manipulating sounds in words to support word reading and spelling (e.g., ‘sat’ is made of the sounds s-a-t)
Understanding that there are different ways of spelling a sound (e.g., ‘f’ can be spelled as ‘ff’ ‘ph’ and ‘gh’)
Understanding that one spelling can represent different sounds (e.g., the ‘o’ spelling makes a different sound in hot and no)
8 Signs your child may benefit from the Sounds-Write Phonics Programme
1. Poor letter recognition.
2. Not progressing with whole class phonics lessons alongside peers.
3. Difficulty with letter-to-sound correspondences.
4. Missing out sounds when reading words aloud (e.g., spin said as ‘sin’).
5. Missing out sounds or using incorrect letters when writing words (e.g., dusk written as ‘duc’).
6. Poor comprehension of written words and sentences.
7. Working memory challenges and difficulties with word manipulation (e.g., changing ‘spin’ to ‘skin’).
8. Reduced fluency and rate when reading aloud.
All of the above signs indicate that a child is experiencing challenges in developing the foundational skills required for successful reading and writing.

Even if your child is not using Sounds-Write as part of whole class teaching, we can collaborate with their teachers to identify which of the Sounds-Write units best reflect where they require additional support in the curriculum.
